Online Bike Rental Booking Platform Using PHP and MySQL

Bike Book is a web-based online bike rental booking platform designed to make two-wheeler rentals easier for customers and administrators. The system lets users explore bikes, provide identity information, select pickup and return dates, add multiple bikes to a cart, complete a booking transaction flow, view booking history, submit reviews, and identify pickup points. Administrators receive a separate management area for bikes, customers, bookings, and income information.

This version of Bike Book uses PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. PHP handles the server-side workflow, authentication, booking logic, and database operations, while MySQL stores the project data.

FrontendHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap-style responsive layout
BackendPHP

AuthenticationPHP Sessions and password hashing

Purpose of the Project

Bike Book focuses on the practical process of renting two-wheelers when they are needed. A customer does not have to maintain a bike for occasional use; instead, the platform provides a structured way to browse the available fleet, select rental dates, choose a pickup point, and manage the resulting booking.

Administrators can manage bike records, customers, reservations, transaction identifiers, and income information from one database.

Key Features

  • Easy Signup and Login: Customers can register and authenticate using an email and password.
  • Identity Verification Details: Registration supports NID, Passport, or DOB Certificate information.
  • Driving License: A driving-license field is available for motorbike booking requirements.
  • Bike Search: Users can search bikes by name, type, or pickup point.
  • Popularity and Rating: Bike results can be ordered by popularity or rating.
  • Multiple Bike Booking: More than one bike can be placed in the rental cart.
  • Pickup and Return Dates: Customers select the rental period during checkout.
  • Availability Checking: Existing booking periods are checked before a new reservation is created.
  • Dynamic Price Calculation: The rental amount is calculated from daily bike prices and the selected number of days.
  • Transaction IDs: A unique transaction identifier is recorded after booking confirmation.
  • Booking History: Customers can view previous bookings, status, amount, and transaction details.
  • Late Return Penalty: A late return can add a penalty to the booking.
  • Reviews: Customers can provide ratings and written reviews for bikes.
  • Special Offers: Users can subscribe to receive special-offer status.
  • Pickup Points: The system displays the pickup locations stored with bikes.

User Roles

User

The user workflow starts with registration and login. A customer can provide identity details and a driving license, explore the bike fleet, search and sort results, add multiple bikes to a cart, select dates and a pickup point, and confirm a booking. The user can later review booking history, return a booking, submit a review, and subscribe for special offers.

Admin

The admin role provides access to the management dashboard. Administrators can add and delete bike records, view customer data, create additional administrators, monitor booking records, and inspect income information. Role-based access prevents normal users from opening these management pages.

Project Modules

Authentication Module

The authentication module handles registration, login, logout, password hashing, and session-based access. PHP sessions keep track of the authenticated user and role. Passwords are stored using PHP password hashing rather than plain text.

Bike Management Module

The bike module stores the bike name, type, description, daily rental price, pickup point, popularity, rating, and availability information. The public area provides searching and sorting, while the admin area provides bike management.

Rental and Booking Module

The booking module connects selected bikes with a customer and rental period. PHP checks existing bookings for overlapping dates, calculates rental days, and generates the total from daily bike prices.

Payment and Transaction Module

After a booking is confirmed, the project creates a unique transaction ID and stores it with the booking. This provides the requested transaction-tracking workflow while keeping the college project independent from a real payment gateway or real card charge.

Review Module

Customers can choose a bike, submit a rating, and write a review. After a review is stored, the bike’s average rating is recalculated from the review records and saved in MySQL.

Admin Reporting Module

The dashboard provides counts for users, bikes, bookings, and income. The booking report also shows late penalties, status, customer information, and transaction identifiers.

Technology Stack

PHP is used for server-side processing, authentication, page routing, form handling, booking calculations, and database operations. MySQL provides relational storage for users, bikes, bookings, booking items, and reviews. HTML and CSS create the responsive interface, while JavaScript supports small client-side interactions and confirmation behavior.

Installation and Setup

Install XAMPP or another PHP/MySQL local server package and start Apache and MySQL. Copy the Bike Book project folder into the XAMPP htdocs directory. Open phpMyAdmin and import the supplied database/bike_book.sql file. The SQL file creates the database, tables, relationships, and sample records.

Open config/database.php and verify the MySQL host, database name, username, and password. A standard XAMPP installation normally uses localhost, the database name bike_book, the root user, and an empty password unless the local MySQL configuration has been changed.

After Apache and MySQL are running, open the project through the local server, for example:

http://localhost/bike_book/

The supplied database includes demonstration credentials. The admin account is admin@bikebook.com with password admin123, while the sample user is user@bikebook.com with password user123.

Usage

Open the Bike Book homepage and select Explore Bikes to view the fleet. Search by name, type, or pickup point, sort by popularity or rating, and add one or more bikes to the cart.

At checkout, the customer selects pickup and return dates and enters the pickup point. PHP checks the selected period against existing bookings. If the bikes are available, the system calculates the rental duration and total, creates the booking, stores its items, and generates a unique transaction ID. The reservation then appears in Booking History.

Customers can use the return action when the rental is finished, and the system can record a late-return penalty. Logged-in users can also submit bike ratings and comments. Pickup Points displays stored rental locations.

Administrators can open the Admin area after login. The dashboard shows operational counts and income information. Bike management supports adding and deleting bikes, while customer and booking pages display management data. Administrators can also create another admin account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Future Scope

  • Connect a production payment gateway for real card transactions.
  • Add full Google and Facebook login integration.
  • Connect pickup points with a live interactive map service.
  • Add dedicated bike-image upload and storage functionality.
  • Expand income statements with date-based rental reports.

Conclusion

Bike Book provides a connected bike rental workflow using PHP and MySQL. Customers can register, authenticate, explore bikes, search and sort the fleet, manage a multi-bike cart, select rental dates, confirm bookings, receive transaction identifiers, review history, submit reviews, and view pickup points.
